Are you the proud owner of a (Barbour) wax jacket? Then you know how important it is to maintain this jacket properly. But how do you know when you have to wax your coat again? And how do you do it exactly? These are questions that we get asked regularly. That’s why you can read all the ins and outs about waxing your jacket in this Suitable blog!
A Barbour wax jacket is impregnated with a wax layer that makes the jacket water-repellent, dirt-repellent and windproof. If you often get outdoors, love special walks, or have a penchant for bunny spotting, buying a wax jacket is an excellent choice. Buying a Barbour wax jacket such as the Barbour Beaufort is a long-term commitment, some customers do 10, 15 or 20 years with such a jacket!
When you buy a wax jacket from Barbour, you don’t have to worry about it for the first two years. You will see that the wax thins out. When you see that the wax has become thinner, your jacket is less protected against external weather influences. Also, your jacket will wear down faster, which will decrease its quality. You can then wax your jacket again yourself with special Barbour wax. This wax of Barbour is a completely natural product, made of beeswax and kerosene.
Barbour wax jacket maintenance
Are you going to wax your Barbour jacket again? A good choice! Take your time and make sure you have cleaned your coat a little bit beforehand. You can do this with a cloth and a little natural soap. Have all traces of mud been removed? Then you can get to work! For waxing, you will need cotton, lint-free cloth. It’s nice to have this one ready, or two if you find that handy.
Waxing works best if the temperature difference between the jacket and the wax is as small as possible. It is therefore advisable to warm up the coat, for example, by briefly blow drying it. It would help if you also warmed up the wax itself. You can easily do this by placing the pot in a pan of hot water to become liquid. When the wax is entirely transparent, it is warm enough. Now you can wax your coat.
Next, take your cotton cloth and gently dip it into the wax. The best results are achieved by waxing the coat as thinly as possible. So be careful and wax in moderation. Use a nice thin layer to wax your jacket. When the waxing is finished, you can let it dry at room temperature. After about 24 hours, you can use the same lint-free cloth to wipe off any residue carefully. Then your coat is wholly greased again and ready to wear.
